RETRO FRIDAY!!

Happy Friday Y'all!

Vicky Vinegar and I have decided that we will be dedicating Fridays to retro. What that means is open to interpretation, but you can expect to hear everything from 1970s B-sides, 80s synth pop, 90s alternative, ska/punk, R&B/Soul, gangsta rap and more.

For my first ever Retro Friday choice I have decided to go back to the glory of my middle school days. This band remains on all my playlists today and have such hits as "Lump", "Peaches" (they come from a can by the way) and "Dune Buggy." However, my selection is none of these, but rather another kick-a** song. Enjoy "Kitty" by the Presidents of the United States:

Welcome to Retro Friday!!

When I think of "retro" music, I basically think of anything put out before 1995. I mean, that's valid, right? 15 years ago I was 13 years old with massive bangs and braces, wearing huge skater jeans and listening to music ranging from Bjork to TLC. Seems fairly retro to me. So the vast amount of music that I consider retro made this a pretty difficult choice. Last night I sifted through some pretty awful music videos from the 80s and 90s, then some awesome videos from the 50s and 60s, but in the end I had to choose a song that matched this sunny, warm morning I just woke up to. I just couldn't resist using Will Smith and his squeaky clean rhymes...feels like "Summertime"!

FEAR THE DEER

It's the morning after the Bucks big comeback win over the Hawks to take a 3-2 series lead. Fear the Deer! That, coupled with it being in the 70s and sunny in Chicago today means that Hugh Honey is in a great mood!

To build off of this happiness momentum, I have selected feel-good song "Song For No One" by Miike Snow (a special shout-out for Mr. Andrew Bolivar for introducing and getting this song stuck in my head a few weeks ago).

I dedicate this song to no one. Get it?? HA HA HA!

Vicky Vinegar's Second Chance

Top o'the morning to everyone! I'm up bright and early because I have a midterm today that I procrastinated studying for yesterday by creating this blog. Quite obviously, the exact same thing is occuring this morning. But to wake myself up(and perhaps a lot of other people in my building), I'm going to blast some straight-up indie-pop goodness from a band I have been pushing on all of my friends for the last 6 months, Fanfarlo. This may be the first time I chose them for Song of the Day, but it certainly won't be the last. With great acoustic versions and cover songs, this band only drives deeper and deeper into my musical heart. Today's song is off their beautiful debut, "Reservoir" and is called, "Harold T. Wilkins, Or How to Wait for a Very Long Time".

Hey guys, this is Hugh Honey from Honey & Vinegar, have you met my partner Vicky?

My song of the day is "Excuses", by The Morning Benders. I just saw these guys at Lincoln Hall a week or so back and if you haven't already heard of them you will soon. Not only is this a great song, but it's also a pretty sweet video as well -- the band invited all their close friends to come record a "Phil Spector Wall of Sound" type recording. Enjoy!

Today's song of the day is "This Orient" by Foals. I am super pumped for their new album, which drops May 25th. I don't have anything else to add, which is depressing considering this is the first post and it should be more exciting. Oh well...
